A trench is simply a narrow, controlled excavation that holds a buried line and protects it. That could be a water service, a sanitary sewer, an electrical or communication conduit, a gas line installed by the utility, or a drain. It always starts with locates

Backfill is where trenches succeed or fail
Anyone can dig a trench. The lasting work is in how it is filled back in. Skip the compaction and the clay above eventually settles, leaving a visible dip across a lawn or, worse, a hollow under a driveway that later cracks. Then factor in the ground: an open, dry, rock-free run is straightforward, while a deep run through wet clay or rock takes more equipment and time. The most reliable way to scope it is to have someone read the site, confirm the locates, and lay out the routes before anything is cut.
